Si&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-s-perseverance-mars-rover-extracts-first-oxygen-from-red-planet\" target=\"_blank\">en abril de 2021 la NASA ya inform\u00f3 de que hab\u00eda logrado fabricar ox\u00edgeno en Marte<\/a>, ahora confirma que ha podido hacerlo de manera fiable en diferentes condiciones atmosf\u00e9ricas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El hallazgo, un paso importante en las posibilidades de una todav\u00eda lejana colonizaci\u00f3n de Marte, ha sido&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/journal\/sciadv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publicado hoy en la revista&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/journal\/sciadv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/journal\/sciadv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Science<\/em><\/a>. &nbsp;Desde febrero de 2021, el llamado \u201cExperimento de utilizaci\u00f3n de recursos de ox\u00edgeno in situ en Marte\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mars2020\/spacecraft\/instruments\/moxie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moxie, en su acr\u00f3nimo ingl\u00e9s<\/a>) ha estado fabricando con \u00e9xito ox\u00edgeno a partir de la atm\u00f3sfera rica en di\u00f3xido de carbono del planeta, cuando aterriz\u00f3 en la superficie marciana como parte de la misi\u00f3n del veh\u00edculo robotizado &#8216;Perseverance&#8217;, de la NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Los investigadores del<a href=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico de Massachusetts<\/a>&nbsp;(MIT, en sus siglas inglesas), organismo responsable del Moxie,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/963073?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">informan en una nota de prensa&nbsp;<\/a>de que, a finales de 2021, el artefacto fue capaz de producir ox\u00edgeno en siete rondas experimentales en diferentes condiciones atmosf\u00e9ricas, incluyendo durante el d\u00eda y la noche, y a trav\u00e9s de las diferentes estaciones marcianas. En cada una de las pruebas, el instrumento alcanz\u00f3 su objetivo de producir seis gramos de ox\u00edgeno por hora, m\u00e1s o menos el ritmo de un \u00e1rbol peque\u00f1o en la Tierra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Los investigadores prev\u00e9n que una versi\u00f3n ampliada de Moxie podr\u00eda enviarse a Marte como proleg\u00f3meno de una misi\u00f3n humana. El objetivo ser\u00eda producir continuamente ox\u00edgeno al ritmo de varios cientos de \u00e1rboles. Con esa capacidad, el sistema generar\u00eda suficiente ox\u00edgeno para mantener a los humanos una vez que llegasen y, especialmente, para alimentar un cohete que devuelva a los astronautas a la Tierra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De momento, la producci\u00f3n constante de Moxie es un primer paso \u201cprometedor\u201d hacia ese objetivo. \u201cHemos aprendido mucho que servir\u00e1 de base para futuros sistemas a mayor escala\u201d, afirma Michael Hecht, investigador principal de la misi\u00f3n en el Observatorio Haystack del MIT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Making Oxygen on Mars\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DpWXBlqWfIc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La producci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno de Moxie en Marte tambi\u00e9n representa la primera demostraci\u00f3n de la \u201cutilizaci\u00f3n de recursos in situ\u201d, que es la idea de cosechar y utilizar los materiales de un planeta (en este caso, el di\u00f3xido de carbono en Marte) para fabricar recursos (como el ox\u00edgeno) que de otro modo tendr\u00edan que ser transportados desde la Tierra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSe trata de la primera demostraci\u00f3n de utilizar realmente recursos en la superficie de otro cuerpo planetario y transformarlos qu\u00edmicamente en algo que ser\u00eda \u00fatil para una misi\u00f3n humana\u201d, afirma el investigador principal adjunto de Moxie, Jeffrey Hoffman, profesor de esta pr\u00e1ctica en el Departamento de Aeron\u00e1utica y Astron\u00e1utica del MIT. \u201cEs hist\u00f3rico en ese sentido\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La versi\u00f3n actual de Moxie es peque\u00f1a por dise\u00f1o, para que quepa a bordo del \u2018Perseverance\u2019, y est\u00e1 construida para funcionar durante periodos cortos, arrancando y apagando con cada carrera, dependiendo del programa de exploraci\u00f3n del veh\u00edculo y de las exigencias de la misi\u00f3n. En cambio, una f\u00e1brica de ox\u00edgeno a gran escala incluir\u00eda unidades m\u00e1s grandes que, idealmente, funcionar\u00edan de forma continua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>C\u00f3mo funciona<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moxie primero aspira el aire marciano a trav\u00e9s de un filtro que lo limpia de contaminantes. A continuaci\u00f3n, el aire se presuriza y se env\u00eda a trav\u00e9s de un instrumento desarrollado que divide electroqu\u00edmicamente el aire rico en di\u00f3xido de carbono en iones de ox\u00edgeno y mon\u00f3xido de carbono.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A continuaci\u00f3n, los iones de ox\u00edgeno se a\u00edslan y se recombinan para formar ox\u00edgeno molecular respirable, u O2, cuya cantidad y pureza se mide en el Moxie antes de devolverlo al entorno de forma inocua, junto con el mon\u00f3xido de carbono y otros gases atmosf\u00e9ricos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Desde el aterrizaje del veh\u00edculo \u2018Perseverance\u2019 en febrero de 2021, los ingenieros han puesto en marcha el instrumento siete veces a lo largo del a\u00f1o marciano, cada vez tardando unas horas en calentarse y luego otra hora en fabricar ox\u00edgeno antes de volver a apagarse. Cada ejecuci\u00f3n se program\u00f3 para una hora diferente del d\u00eda o de la noche, y en diferentes estaciones, para ver si pod\u00eda adaptarse a los cambios en las condiciones atmosf\u00e9ricas del planeta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLa atm\u00f3sfera de Marte es mucho m\u00e1s variable que la de la Tierra\u201d, se\u00f1ala Hoffman. \u201cLa densidad del aire puede variar en un factor de dos a lo largo del a\u00f1o, y la temperatura puede variar en 100 grados.
